Don't Worry, I'm not Dead

Posted April 20, 2008.

Yes, that's right, I'm not dead. What I am is working really hard on the WordPress version of Starry City. And surprisingly, it's very close to being finished. I may not be able to get it done until I leave for Academic Games (this school club I do) Nationals on Thursday night but I promise I'll try.
The poll results are in and...I've chosen to buy Peppermint Crazy! It will help symbolize our fresh WordPress start. And don't worry, I doubt I'm ever going to slip into a 20-day no blog stretch over there, because I've already jotted down some blog ideas.
So don't give up on Starry City yet, because I promise it's coming soon!

The Time Has Come to Pick a Name

Posted March 30, 2008.

Okay, so I'm working hard on implementing WordPress and I'd really like to decide between Peppermint Crazy and Starry City. So I've set up a poll to see which you guys like better.

Vote here!

Thanks so much, I appreciate it.

Awakening Starry City

Posted March 20, 2008.

Yes, I know that I've extremely neglected Starry City lately. I'm so behind. I've made a million categories that I haven't added to the sidebar; I haven't posted in 16 days. This ugly layout has been up forever.
So I've made a decision. I'm going to switch to WordPress.
I'm a busy person and I think that WordPress might make it easier to update my site once I convert, plus it will give me a fun challenge and a reason to keep up with Starry City.
Believe me, it won't be easy. I'll have to convert all my pages. But I've found a nice tutorial on making themes that seems simple enough, and I'm going to keep working until I get it right.
I only have a few questions for you guys. Are there any WordPress tips, good theme tutorials, or good plugins I should use? I'd love to hear about them. Also, what would you think of me possibly buying http://peppermintcrazy.com and calling the site Peppermint Crazy instead of Starry City?

Tips for a Good Florida Vacation

Posted March 4, 2008.

My school had a week off a few weeks ago, so on Wednesday, the 27th of February, my family flew down to visit my grandparents in Florida, returning on March 3rd. I complied these tips for you upon my return.
(Drawn from personal experiences. Expertise or good results are not guaranteed.)

  • Always put lots and lots of sunscreen on both cheeks, right under our eyes, and keep applying regularly although you know it won't work and you'll still get a bunch of red right there, (even though you've never been sunburned anywhere else on your body ever) which, although it does not hurt, will prove to be highly annoying because people will always be asking about it.
  • Bring more than 6 books, even if you go to Barnes & Noble and get two more (then your total will come to 8), for a six day (including traveling days) trip because otherwise you'll run out and halfway through the plane ride home you'll finish the 8th book and be extremely bored for the rest of the plane ride, and then you will get airsick.
  • Do as much possible to not get a bad cold right before the trip, because otherwise you will feel miserable and use up 4 packs of travel tissues on the plane ride there, and then the skin on your nose will get dry and itchy and disgusting from all the tissue blowing. Plus you might need to take Sudafed, which tastes gross. But don't worry, your cold will go away by the 3rd or 4th day and when you get home it will be completely gone.
  • Try not to think too much about your cute dog at the kennel at home while you're on your trip. You will just miss him too much.
  • Bring along your sunglasses! Otherwise when you are at the pool, reading in one of those lounge chairs, you'll be forced to do something dumb like wear swim goggles to block out the sun. Which, apart from looking stupid, is really uncomfortable.
  • Even though you may not be able to do a handstand in the pool, keep practicing the whole time. You will be able to master it in the end.

QOTW: Have you been on a trip recently? What's the most fun trip you've ever been on? What is your own personal "tips" list for one of those trips?

Tale of the Miracle iPod

Posted February 11, 2008.

I've had my blue 4 gigabyte 2nd generation iPod nano for about a year. It was a twelth birthday gift, and my thirteenth birthday is now approaching fast (just five days until my thirteenth, folks). It has served me well so far, and though I've been lazy about adding new songs and a little negligent of it in the excitement over my new phone, it has been a great iPod. However, just a normal one.
And then...
It became the miracle iPod.
I am the queen of lost items, but I had been able to avoid losing my iPod for about the whole year. There was a scare for a few weeks where I thought it was lost and I freaked out, but it turned out that my sister had just borrowed it (hers had broken and she didn't have a new one yet). There were no other problems besides that.
Along came one day, when I was getting out of the car to go into my house. I had just come from bat mitzvah class, and I have a track on my iPod that helps me learn my torah portion. So I was carrying the iPod in this folder envelope type thing, and unknown to me the clasp to the folder broke. So my poor iPod slipped into the snow, seemingly lost forever as I continued on inside.
However, all was not lost. A next door neighbor soon found the iPod, and came to my mother. "Hmm, that's funny," she said, "I just found this iPod in the snow. Do you know whose it is?" Well, of course my mom recognized it immediately, and the iPod and I were reunited. That's miracle #1, but it's nothing compared to miracle #2.
Well, I was so glad to have my iPod back, so I put it safely in my jeans pocket and journeyed upstairs. Only that's the thing. The iPod never got retrieved from the pocket.
Down through the wash cycle it went, with me perfectly innocent and unknowing until my little sister came screaming, "Mari! Mari! Your iPod went through the wash!" Well, that was about the only thing that could have torn me away from Gilmore Girls. I ran to grab my iPod. It looked almost the same, but the top white part with the hold switch had risen up.
I turned it on. Nothing happened. So, I went to try it in the computer. I plugged it in. I held my breath. I turned it on. I held my breath.
IT WORKED!
My iPod survived, and now the only problem is that you have to press down the top to get the hold switch to work. A minor annoyance, and a good extra security issue.
If that's not a miracle, I don't know what is. But sorry guys, I'm not selling my miraculous wonder.
